The first Reconstruction Legislature from territory taken from Hot Spring, Jefferson and Saline counties formed Grant County on February 4, 1869. It was named for Ulysses S. Grant who had been elected President of the United States in November 1868. The county seat is Sheridan. Grant County is a large, rural county of rolling, pine-covered hills owned by big timber companies. The pine-covered cutover land is a sanctuary for many bird species. The Saline River winds through Grant County and into the Quachita River in southern Arkansas. Fishing and hunting are extremely popular. Jenkins Ferry State Park, a Civil War battle site, features swimming, picnicking and a boat launch ramp into the Saline River. The Grant County Museum exhibits artifacts of area history going back to the Indian cultures. As of the 2000 census, Grant County had a population of 16,464 residents.

Grant County is one of about 3,141 counties and county equivalents in the United States. It has 631.8 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 28.1 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 69.5%. On the 2000 census form, 99.3% of the population reported only one race, with 2.5% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 1.1% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.61 persons compared to an average family size of 3.00 persons.

In 2008 manufacturing was the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an average wage per job of $28,700. Per capita income grew by 15.1% between 1998 and 2008 (adjusted for inflation).
