Calhoun County

Formed in 1856 from Gilmer County. Named for J. C. Calhoun, eminent South Carolina orator and statesman. He served as member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, and also as Secretary of War and Secretary of State. He also was vice-president during part of President Andrew Jackson’s administration.
