The first Spanish explorers explored the region now occupied by Texas, then populated by numerous Indian tribes (Caddos, Apaches, Comanches), at the beginning of the sixteenth century. However, finding no gold, the Spaniards lost interest for more than a century.
The first colony, Ysleta (today GR Paso), dates from 1682, and in 1720, Texas was still a slightly colonized cross-border region. The first city, San Antonio, dates from 1730. In 1820, three centuries after the first explorations, Texas had only 2,000 Spanish settlers.
In 1821, Texas, which until then had increased the vice-royalty authority of New Spain, became a state of the Federal Republic of Mexico. However, colonization by Americans could develop, encouraged by Stephen Austin and with the agreement of the Mexican authorities. Thus, on the eve of the Texas revolution, they represented the largest community.
In autumn 1835, they revolted against the dictatorship of Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (headquarters Alamo, 6 March 1836) and proclaimed, in March 1836, the creation of an independent republic of Texas. The Texas forces that have beaten the Mexican army on April 21, 1836 and captured Santa Anna (battle of San Jacinto), Texas have finally joined the Union when they became December 29, 1845, after nine years of independence, the twentieth eighth American state.
In order to force Mexico to renounce its rights over the region, the Americans unleashed an American-Mexican war (May 1846). Victorieux (battle of Buena Vista, 22 of February of 1847), obtained all the Mexican territories located to the north of Rio Grande (treated Guadalupe Hidalgo, 2 of February of 1848).
At the time of the Sécession war, Texas, a slave, was found in the camp of the Southwest. Serving as a rear base, it suffered less than the other southern states. The decades that followed were marked by strong growth. In 1880, the beaten West Indians were displaced. The railroad progressively quadrille the State and the cattle begins to become a source of wealth in a Texan economy dominated by the cotton culture. The population quintupled between 1860 and 1900. Change accelerated after 1900. Texas became one of the most industrialized states in the Union, thanks to oil, discovered for the first time to Spindletop in 1901. World War II caused the emergency aeronautics and electronics sectors. Alongside industrialization, important metropolises appeared – Dallas, Houston -, favoring demographic growth.
