I’ll start with my experience of the application process at San Diego State University through your website, then move on to travel and looking for an apartment, then to the university and the leisure activities.
When traveling to the USA , I can only recommend that you get to know the country two to three weeks before the start of the semester. Be it on a road trip through California , moving into your apartment beforehand or visiting another city like LA or Las Vegas. This gives you an early impression of the country and the city, where you will end up living for at least 4 months.
You also have the opportunity to view your apartment or flat, because most of the time the pictures of the apartments or rooms have been edited and taken directly after the last renovation.
There is no guarantee that you will get the apartment in the photo and by arriving earlier you can avoid nasty surprises.
The apartment search turned out to be with me on the spot a godsend because I graduated with a fellow student the semester abroad and the apartment search turned out to second as significantly easier. Because there are already two people, you have to look for a maximum of one or two other people with whom you then move in together at the end. The most important thing when looking for an apartment is finding shared apartments.
I got to know a lot of people in San Diego who agreed on this group and found their flat share. On site you then meet in the group and at the beginning you have many viewing appointments to find the optimal apartment. Apartments can be found on Craigslist and other online portals where apartments and rooms are offered.
There are different sites offered by former students. These sites offer apartments at slightly higher prices, but have the advantage that you can rent these apartments for one semester.
In the case of student dormitories, for example Boulevard 63, you usually have longer rental periods and, in the end, problems to sublet your room. In my case it was the case that our landlord did not know that his apartment was being offered on this site and met with an agent from this site on our viewing appointment. The end of the story was that we could rent the apartment at the actual price and didn’t have to pay a brokerage fee per month. In order to continue the topic, you must have found your apartment nearing the start of the semester, otherwise you run the risk of not finding a flat share or not finding a suitable apartment, which again favors an earlier arrival to the USA.
Finally, on the apartment hunt, I have to say that I recommend everyone to move to Pacific Beach or Mission Beach. Living on the beach is very different from living on campus. The beach offers so much more quality of life and fun. The sunsets alone, the parties or bars are simply much more numerous and exciting.
Taking the Taco Tuesdays in Pacific Beach as an example, you can see that everyone from town comes to Pacific Beach on a Tuesday to celebrate. When the semester starts, you first get a tour of the campus , some introductory events, your student ID and the access data for Blackboard. Everything organized and carefully planned by the ALI office, you don’t really have to worry about missing something important or not understanding.
Blackboard regulates all communication and file management at the university. All announcements, course files and areas for sending assignments can be found there.
The communication with the university has shown to be very simple. The American Language Institute (ALI) is available to all foreign students in all questions and you can get the information you need very quickly.
Everything is very structured and you don’t feel left alone with your affairs in terms of foreign BAföG or anything else.
The university itself is beautiful , the classrooms are equipped with modern technology and thanks to the good weather, the university has created many opportunities to learn outside.
Regarding the courses, I can say that it depends a lot on the professors what grade you get in the end. A personal bond is important, the regular submission of homework and assignments are an integral part of the grades and exams are of secondary importance. Check mcat-test-centers to see more reviews from current students.
Of course, the exam or the midterm is important for the grade, but the subjective reference to the professor is the top priority for the final grade. With a personal bond and conscientious work, you can achieve every desired grade at San Diego State.
The modules I have taken are the following:
- Internet Marketing – Isa Grimes
- Business Plan Development – Kimberly King
- Human Resource Management – Daniel Del Castillo
- Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship – Timothy Orlando
I can highly recommend all subjects except the last mentioned if you are studying business administration and want to focus on business start- ups and marketing . Fundamentals of Entrepreneurship was just a boring sitting around for me, as the professor only reads from one book and has two exams written. No collaboration or interaction, just reading aloud. However, it must be said that the grade in this module was easily earned because the exam is simple.
The other subjects are very pleasant because of the professors, as the professors mentioned are very focused on interaction with the class . Light lessons also help to build a personal bond with the professor and to get a better grade .
Finally, I’ll give you some tips on what to do in San Diego.
The university offers a surfing course at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center , which costs around $ 175. This lasts for the entire semester and takes place once a week. Depending on how busy the classes are, you can also go to a class twice a week, as the surf instructors don’t pay too much attention to who is surfing when.
If you live on the beach, I can only recommend that you go to all of the city’s festivals. Be it the Christmas parade, the Pacific Beach Festival or other events. It’s always worth it and you get to know so many people from the USA or from your semester. Bars and clubs such as Duckdive, Mavericks and Backyard can be found on Garnett Ave., which are located in the heart of the Pacific Beach district. Clubs and bars all close at 2 a.m. at the latest, as the law stipulates that alcohol cannot be served after 2 a.m.
