The region was discovered in 1512 by the Spanish Pedra-pomes León, then explored by the English the Hon. Sir Walter Raleigh between 1584 and 1587. In August 1585, a first colony is established on Roanoke Island, but is abandoned a year later.
A second attempt took place in 1587 with a group of 121 settlers, with no success. In 1629, the territory located to the south Virginia is called Caroline in honor of Charles I ER of England. In 1663, Charles II grants the Carolina territory to eight owners who melt from private establishments. The English philosopher John Locke drew up in 1670 a Constitution that provides for four parliamentary chambers and three orders of nobility; never applied, it is abandoned in 1693. In 1728, Carolina becomes property of the Crown. In 1730, North Carolina was separated from South Carolina. The colonists soon rose up against royal authority, and North Carolina joined the independence movement in April 1776.
War of Independence
During the War of Independence, the territory was invaded by the British (1781). North Carolina becomes the twelfth State of the Union on November 21, 1789. In February 1861, it initially refused to make a session. However, when Abraham Lincoln decided to forcibly restrict the separatist movement, Caroline do Norte joined the southern Confederation. The 1868 Constitution assigns voting rights to Pretos. The same year, the Ku Klux Klan began to carry out an intimidating action against them, at times very violent. A couple of American presidents in the nineteenth century, James Polk and Andrew Johnson, are from North Carolina.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
The state University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is located in the city of Chapel Hill or is the reason why the city of Chaple Hill exists. Duke University in Durham
The private university Duke University, often simply called Duke, in the city of Durham is the city’s figurehead. The university is located in the so-called Research Triangle consisting of the cities of Durham, Chapel Hill and Raleigh. The university’s name comes from the Duke family, who worked in the tobacco industry. The university was only founded in 1924, but the university’s roots go back to 1838.
