The region was explored by French woodcutters from 1618. It was populated by Amerindian tribes, mainly Ottawas, Potawatomis, Miamis and Hurons. The territory was first colonized by the French. The first establishment founded was the Santa Marie mission, to Sault, in 1668, by the Jésuite father Jacques Embute.
The city of Detroit was founded in 1701 by Antoine of the Mothe Cadillac. The region has become an active center for the fur trade. French establishments passed to the British with the Treaty of Paris of 1763. The one attributed to the United States by the Treaty of Versailles of 1783, region was definitively abandoned by the British only in 1796. Réoccupée by the British during the war of 1812. But these were hunted in 1813 for the victories of the Americans William H. Harrison, near the Thames and Oliveira H. Perry, on Lake Érié. In 1825, the opening of the Érié channel favored the development of commerce and caused a wave of immigration. Michigan entered the Union on January 26, 1837, as the twenty-sixth American state. It experienced rapid development from the 1850s thanks to agriculture.
Nearly 380,000 new immigrants arrived in Michigan between 1840 and 1860. Industrialization was rapid from 1890 thanks to the automobile industry. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Michigan became the center of the American automobile industry, concentrated in the Detroit region. This was hit with a whip by the 1929 crisis.
World War II restores prosperity and full employment. Michigan attracted black emigrants from the southern states. In 1943, racial tensions in Detroit triggered a riot that cost 34 people their lives. Racial hatred re-surfaced during the fight for civic rights in the 1960s. The Detroit election of Coleman Young’s first black mayor in 1974 made it possible to mitigate racial conflicts.
Hardly touched by the 1980s crisis, the automotive industry lost many jobs after employing more than a third of Michigan’s industrial workforce. However, the growth in service activities has made it possible to offset part of the job losses.
