The region is populated by Indian Illinois and Iowa when the French explorers Jacques inlaid and Louis Jolliet explored it in 1673. It then belongs (1682-1803) immensely to the Louisiana territory. The first permanent colony was founded only in 1788 Franco-Canadien by Julien Dubuque.

In 1803, the region was surrendered by France to the United States, within the scope of the Louisiana purchase, and successively made part of the Louisiana (1805-1812), Missouri (1812-1821), Michigan (1834-1836) and Wisconsin (1836) territories -1838). In 1808, the federal government greatly melted Madison; however, the garrison must withdraw in 1813 due to Indian hostility. Thus, American colonization really only starts from the second half of the nineteenth century. Cities then develop rapidly (Dubuque, Davenport, Burlington). Constituted in autonomous territory in 1838, Iowa joins the Union December 28, 1846, as twenty-ninth American state; Moines became the capital in 1857. Strongly opposed to slavery, Iowa further supports the North during the civil war.

State development is accelerating with the construction of railways, as Iowa quickly became an agricultural region. Hardly hit by the crisis of the 1930s (see economic crisis of 1929), the economy of the State renewed, however, with prosperity during the Second World War. In 1993, the region was declared a disaster zone after the floods in Mississippi and Missouri.
