Established February 4, 1864 with its county seat at Pierce. In 1885 the county seat was moved to Murray , in 1890 to Osborn, and finally to Wallace in 1893. The first organized unit of government within Idaho boundaries, created and named for the Shoshoni Indians in 1858 by the Washington Territorial Legislature as part of Washington, effective in 1861.

Shoshone County is one of 44 counties in Idaho. It has 2,633.9 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 4.8 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population declined by 30.2%. On the 2000 census form, 98.3% of the population reported only one race, with 0.1% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 1.9% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.30 persons compared to an average family size of 2.82 persons.

In 2008 retail trade was the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an average wage per job of $30,238. Per capita income grew by 19.7% between 1998 and 2008 (adjusted for inflation).
