Established January 22, 1864 with its county seat at Soda Springs. In 1866 it was moved to Malad City, because of its growth and its location on the stagecoach line and freight road between Corinne, Utah, and the mines in Butte, Montana. Named for Lake Oneida, New York, the area from which most of the early settlers had emigrated.

Oneida County is one of 44 counties in Idaho. It has 1,200.3 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 3.5 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 44.0%. On the 2000 census form, 99.5% of the population reported only one race, with 0.1% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 2.3% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.85 persons compared to an average family size of 3.35 persons.

In 2008 retail trade was the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an average wage per job of $12,993. Per capita income grew by 13.9% between 1998 and 2008 (adjusted for inflation).
