Established March 18, 1895 with its county seat at Shoshone. Lincoln was much larger originally, in 1913 Gooding and Minidoka took about half the original Lincoln County, after the creation of Jerome in 1919, Lincoln was left with only 1,206 square miles. Named for President Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States, under whose administration the Idaho Territory was established.

Lincoln County is one of 44 counties in Idaho. It has 1,205.5 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 3.9 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 32.3%. On the 2000 census form, 98.1% of the population reported only one race, with 0.5% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 13.4% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.77 persons compared to an average family size of 3.27 persons.
