Established February 8, 1919 with its county seat at Jerome. Three sources for the name are commonly given: Jerome Hill, one of the developers of the North Side Irrigation Project; his grandson, Jerome Kuhn, Jr.; or his son-in-law, Jerome Kuhn. All were important to the growth of the county.

Jerome County is one of 44 counties in Idaho. It has 599.8 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 35.4 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 78.9%. On the 2000 census form, 98.1% of the population reported only one race, with 0.2% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 17.2% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.89 persons compared to an average family size of 3.33 persons.

In 2008 ag., forestry, fishing was the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an average wage per job of $28,250. Per capita income grew by 8.8% between 1998 and 2008 (adjusted for inflation).
