Established January 28, 1913 with its county seat at Gooding. Named for Frank R. Gooding, pioneer sheep rancher, early mayor of the city of Gooding, later Idaho Governor and U. S. Senator. Mountain men and fur traders trapped the Malad River extensively in the early 1800s. Settlers came to the rich agricultural lands of the Hagerman Valley in the 1860s.

Gooding County is one of 44 counties in Idaho. It has 730.8 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 19.7 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 63.7%. On the 2000 census form, 97.2% of the population reported only one race, with 0.2% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 17.1% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.76 persons compared to an average family size of 3.22 persons.

In 2008 manufacturing was the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an average wage per job of $40,304. Per capita income grew by 19.1% between 1998 and 2008 (adjusted for inflation).
