Established March 15, 1915 with its county seat at Emmett. Named for the state nickname, “Gem State.” Fur trappers were in the area as early as 1818 and Alexander Ross explored Squaw Creek in 1824. Prospectors and miners moved through the county in 1862 in route to the gold rush in the Boise Basin, and by the next year irrigation began along the Payette River.

Gem County is one of 44 counties in Idaho. It has 562.6 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 29.2 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 61.7%. On the 2000 census form, 98.2% of the population reported only one race, with 0.1% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 6.9% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.70 persons compared to an average family size of 3.12 persons.

In 2008 retail trade was the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an average wage per job of $19,709. Per capita income grew by 13.6% between 1998 and 2008 (adjusted for inflation).
