Established March 5, 1895 with Hailey as the county seat. Named for James G. Blaine, U. S. Secretary of State (1889-1892) under President Benjamin Harrison. The area was first explored in 1818 by Donald Mackenzie.

Blaine County is one of 44 counties in Idaho. It has 2,644.8 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 8.4 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 230.3%. On the 2000 census form, 98.4% of the population reported only one race, with 0.1% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 10.7% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.40 persons compared to an average family size of 2.96 persons.
