Established January 23, 1915, with its county seat at St. Maries, by an act of the state legislature from the southern part of Kootenai County. Named for a Coeur d’Alene Indian chief. Some settlement began after the completion of the Mullan Road in 1860, but most settlers came to the area after the discovery of gold near St. Maries in 1880.

Benewah County is one of 44 counties in Idaho. It has 776.1 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 11.9 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 47.2%. On the 2000 census form, 98.2% of the population reported only one race, with 0.1% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 1.5% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.52 persons compared to an average family size of 2.99 persons.
