Peach County was the last county formed in Georgia. Created from Houston and Macon counties, it is named after the area’s most famous crop.

Byron was named for the English writer and poet, Lord Byron. It was the site of the South’s largest “pop festival” held on the Fourth of July weekend in 1970.

Some interesting historical sites include the McArthur-Saxon House (1850), the Thweat-Brown Home (1863), and the Everett-Culpepper-Grady Home (1834).

Fort Valley is home to Fort Valley State University, a member of the University System of Georgia. It is a historically black college and a land-grant institution.

There are several special events in Peach County including the Camellia Festival, the Georgia Peach Festival, the Festival of Trees, and the Jail House Alley Art Show.

Peach County is one of about 3,141 counties and county equivalents in the United States. It has 151.1 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 180.3 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 48.0%. On the 2000 census form, 99.2% of the population reported only one race, with 45.4% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 4.2% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.68 persons compared to an average family size of 3.14 persons.

In 2008 manufacturing was the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an average wage per job of $56,923. Per capita income grew by 4.1% between 1998 and 2008 (adjusted for inflation).
