Searcy County was created in 1838, from a part of Madison County and was named for Richard Searcy, a pioneer in Arkansas Territory. The landscape of Searcy County is rugged Ozark Mountains. Marshall is the county seat. The Buffalo River angles across the county with huge limestone bluffs surrounding the clear blue water of the stream. The Hurricane River Cave has been continuously occupied since ancient times and features a crystal clear underground river flowing its entire length. Blowing Cave near Marshall has a long corridor where the wind always blows on its way to the surface from a “bottomless pit.” Searcy County is proud of its own and celebrates each year with a Buffalo River Days Festival, where arts and crafts and a variety of entertainment are offered. As of the 2000 census, Searcy County had a population of 8,261 residents.

In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 6.9%. On the 2000 census form, 98.7% of the population reported only one race, with <0.1% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 1.0% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.33 persons compared to an average family size of 2.83 persons.
