Lanier County, the 155th county formed in Georgia, was created in 1920. The county was named in honor of Georgia state poet, Sidney Lanier.

Lakeland, the county seat, is Lanier County's only incorporated municipality. Originally called Mill Town, Lakeland received its current name in 1925 in honor of its proximity to several lakes including Grand Bay Lake, Lake Irma and Banks Lake.

For many years, Lakeland owned and operated its own railroad.

The county is famous for its excellent fishing in the Alapaha River, as well as in its many small lakes. Banks Lake Wildlife Refuge, which includes a 3,900-acre lake, is located in the county.

Lanier shares Moody Air Force Base with Lowndes County on its western boundary.

One festival held in the county is the Flatlanders Frolic Arts and Crafts Show. This event features bluegrass music, a road race and various other Labor Day weekend events. Also held in Lanier County is the Living Murals Celebration held in the Spring.

Lanier County is one of about 3,141 counties and county equivalents in the United States. It has 186.8 sq. miles in land area and a population density of 45.1 per square mile. In the last three decades of the 1900s its population grew by 43.9%. On the 2000 census form, 98.8% of the population reported only one race, with 25.6% of these reporting African-American. The population of this county is 1.7% Hispanic (of any race). The average household size is 2.69 persons compared to an average family size of 3.12 persons.

In 2008 educational services was the largest of 20 major sectors. It had an average wage per job of $29,943. Per capita income grew by 21.2% between 1998 and 2008 (adjusted for inflation).
