The Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly Belgian Congo and Zaire, Republic of Central Africa. The country got its current name during the upheavals in 1997. Sometimes the country is referred to as Congo (Kinshasa) to distinguish it from neighboring Congo (Brazzaville). Officially called the Democratic People's Republic of Congo, abbreviated DR Congo.

The Democratic Republic of Congo is generally sparsely populated, and apart from mining, most of the country's economic activity takes place around the capital Kinshasa. The country has great natural riches, but the dictator for many years, Mobuto Sese Seko, entrenched a considerable part of them. At the independence of Belgium in 1960, there were no structures in the country to build a nation, and revolts and periods of civil war have since characterized the country. Around the year 2000, this has developed into major acts of war involving troops from neighboring countries.
