Chad - education, The public school system has eight years of compulsory education from the age of six and consists of a six-year elementary school, which is followed by a general secondary education or a vocational education. The upper secondary education includes a four-year and a two-year level, and the final exam provides admission to Chad University in Ndjamena. More than half of the adult population is illiterate (1995).

Chad, eng. Chad, Republic of North Central Africa, French Colony 1910-60. The first three decades after independence were marked by recurring droughts and long periods of civil war, especially between a black Christian population in the south and a lighter Muslim population in the north. It resulted in very limited economic development and the country became one of the world's poorest countries. In 1993, large oil reserves were found in the southern part of the country; commercial oil extraction was initiated in 2003.

Chad Constitution, The Constitution of the Republic of Chad is from 1997. The legislative power resides with a 155-member National Assembly elected directly for a four-year term; of the constituencies are 25 single and 34 multi-member constituencies. The president, who is the head of state, is elected by direct election for a term of five years with the possibility of one re-election. He appoints a prime minister as well as the other members of government with the prime minister's approval. A parliament with two chambers may be on the way; introduction of a Senate is under consideration (2005).
