The White pain “Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe” is inspired by the first model from the 1950s.
Diving as a sport is becoming increasingly popular. The mixture of concentration, fitness and adrenaline in conjunction with the breathtaking insights into the underwater world, makes the sport a unique experience. The matching watches provide the luxury brands. But has to actually meet a diver’s watch which requirements?
According to timedictionary.com, a high quality, professional divers watch must withstand a pressure of approximately 20 bar, which corresponds to a depth of 200 meters. Even with 25 meters including no moisture must enter the clock. Also, it should be resistant to salt water and shock proof. Although most sport divers not deeper than 40 meters in move, a safety reserve is often useful, because swimming movements and strikes against the timer increase mostly the pressure. Sometimes, the most important criterion for diver’s watches is that the dials are easy to read. Therefore, such timepieces are usually no complications such as a moon phase calendar or a Tourbillon.
Sporty Design, Dark Colors
In the 1950s, the French naval forces set up an elite of combat swimmers. For this, a watch was needed, even running water. White pain was commissioned and produced a watch with the name “Fifty Fathoms”. One of the latest versions is loosely based on the first divers model from White pain Fifty Fathoms, Bathyscaphe.
The Royal Oak Offshore diver of Audemars Piguet can withstand even a pressure of 300 meters. The case of the watch is made of steel, the rubber strap. Sporty design, edgy body and dark colors – many diving watches are similar in their formal language. The trend towards black timepieces of Haute Horlogerie continues at the diver’s watches. So, the Gucci Dive is fully kept in the black robe. In addition to the rubber strap, which is equipped with a safety clasp, the Italian luxury brand provides a long nylon strap for the wet suit.
Neon Elements for Readability
Some timepieces have small color elements, often to the readability under water to improve. The Sea Hawk by Girard Perregaux, with decentralised seconds and power reserve indicator, keeps water resistant up to 1000 meters, thanks to screwed Case back and protected Crown. The pointer of the waters depth by mouth are decorated in neon colors. The same applies for the current Calibre de Cartier diver, the first diver’s watch by Cartier. Scuba divers to determine the exact depth, where they are located with this watch. The sporty simple Alpina extreme diver 300 has in turn colored numbers on the bezel.
The diver’s watch of Jean Richard once again is dark blue like the ocean. The same applies for the Omega Seamaster, which picks up the colors of the sea. In contrast to the divers watches from Hublot: the series “Oceanographic” is considered a classic among the divers watches. The Oceanographic 4000 up to 4,000 metres stood holding a depth, is available in feminine, but also striking variation in white with pink gold for the female divers. By the way: The diver’s watches of luxury brands fit not only the divers – but also to the tailored suit.
