Your son suffers from headache? Itching in the eyes? Dizziness? Probably suffers from astigmatism child. Be aware of the first symptoms to intervene as early as possible.

Symptoms of Astigmatism

The astigmatism is a disorder of the eye characterized by blurred vision of the images, both near and far. In the case of children, the astigmatism childl, affects them either in the vision near and far, due to the surface area of the cornea not being completely concave but rather oval.

This disease eye is, usually, associated with other eye problems such as myopia or hyperopia , and features a large negative impact on quality of life.

The incidence of astigmatism varies with the age, being that it is a problem quite common in the first months of life (approximately 20%), decreasing to about 5% at school age and in young adults reaches close to 60% of individuals.

In Portugal, it is estimated that approximately 20% of children suffer from errors of the refractory, including the astigmatism.

Astigmatism is an error temperature, that is, it is a change in the physiognomy of the eye that’t interfere in the way in which images are formed and the brain.

It is a disease eye is relatively common, accounting for approximately 13% of all errors refractive. Other errors refractive also very common are the myopia and the hyperopia.

This problem arises due to a change of the curvature of the cornea, the innermost layer of the eye. The cornea should be perfectly convex but, instead, presents itself irregular. This change is such that, when the images are projected on the retina are distorted by passing through the cornea, causing them to appear blurry.

The cause of astigmatism is still not well known. Typically, the child is born with astigmatism, and, in most cases, appears associated with hyperopia or myopia.

Its origin is genetic although, in some cases, can appear after a trauma or eye surgery.

The manifestations of the most common astigmatism child are headaches, itchy eyes, and dizziness, due to the fact that of astigmatism child be associated to myopia or hypermetropia. Must be attentive to the small signals that may indicate that your child suffers from this disorder the eye:

  • Headaches to get out of the school;
  • Irritated eyes;
  • Sensitivity to light;
  • Shut your eyes to see better in the distance;
  • Quite close to the objects of the face to see better;
  • Puts face very close to books and magazines to read;
  • Decrease in school performance.

These symptoms can sometimes be confused with disorders at the level of the writing, since many children, by the fact that they can not see well, you can exchange letters as p with q, or b with d.

Sometimes the children also rotate the head, looking for a way through which they can see a little better.

If this disturbance is not detected and corrected in a timely manner, the child may come to have various emotional difficulties and learning.

The focusing problems in children are typically resolved with the use of glasses. For small children there are special glasses and adapted, lenses with unbreakable frames and made in rubber which does not cause injury in the event of a fall.

In case there is a astigmatism significant that is present since the first years of life and that has not been corrected up to the age of 5 or 6 years of age, can develop a framework that is known as amblyopia, the so-called “lazy eye”. This problem causes a change of the normal development of vision. This change, when it occurs after 5-6 years, it tends to become permanent and irreversible.
